| About the Venue | ||||
Whilst fishing at the weir on stoke lock island members must park their cars sensibly and not in front of lock keepers gate or the wheelie bin area. Also when crossing the lock gates close the small wooden gates after going through them. members who hold a BW key and use the toilets must leave them clean and as you find them. Fishing is allowed on the island above the weir on the weir side of the island only. The rules are that members can fish the concrete boat mooring below and up above the lock between October and April only ( Even then members must give way to any boat traffic.) Members are reminded that they must be polite to Lock keepers and Boaters at all times and reports of abuse verbal or otherwise members will be dealt with by the committee and could result in a ban from the club. Also no fishing from any type of boat is allowed near the weir. ( from the Bull nose to the weir) any boats should be reported to the lock keeper or BW. When driving through the Estate please drive slowly and give way to either cattle or pedestrians or estate workers. and lock the gate after entering or exiting the venue. When fishing this venue at the weir members are reminded that areas of the weir are quite snaggy and therefore should use relevant gear to accommodate this. Also as the rule states unhooking mats must be carried and used as the island is gravel and the boat ramp concrete. The club advises that the boat ramp is only really suitable for one member at a time and two/three members on the gravel island at a time depending on the water levels, at some times only one/two can fish it. The weir can produce some very big Barbel previous ones have touched 17lb. It also holds huge Chub and Carp. The island peg lends itself to stick floating or waggler fishing for the chub and often a member uses a fly rod with great success. Most baits work here and normal feeder/Bomb tactics work best. Fishing right in the white frothy water often produces the bigger specimens but it is snaggy if you can up up with the odd lost rig the rewards can be big. Away from the weir itself there tends to be lots of streamer weed and trotting down the sides of this again often produces quality fish. The main reports are that this venue produces best through the day/evening and quieter through the night. A quick phone call to the lock keeper at this venue could save a wasted journey if members only want to fish the weir itself, as it is has few pegs. Members must show courtesy to other members when fishing the weir section and common sense must prevail. The depth averages only one foot to three foot across the river with depths a little deeper nearer to the weir itself with the odd deeper hole,depending again on general water levels and time of year. Always worth checking with the lock keeper for prediction's of water levels when intending fishing the gravel island. |

From Burton Joyce village take the Station road turning opposite the small newsagent, go across the Burton Joyce level crossing and drive along our Road day ticket stretch to the pub. Just past the pub you will see a small island/roundabout with the access gate to our Ferry Field stretch, Locked with Ashfield Key go through the gate and follow the trent up about a mile to the lock itself. Be very quiet when entering/ exiting hear and take extreme care when crossing the actual lock gates taking care to close the small wooden gates after you. Fishing on the island is only from the boat ramp and gravel area and NOT from the high wall or bull nose or into the lock itself. Ashfield members do have permission between October/ April to fish the concrete boat mooring at the entrance to the lock this is signposted, and can be accessed via steps at each end. We also have the same ruling on the boat mooring above the lock between these times. To get to our other stretch above the lock as you cross the cattle grid near the lock turn right just before the car park and follow the grass track around to a gate (Ashfield Key) and follow the track around the field and up onto the trent bank where you can drive along a cinder track and park behind you peg all along the stretch all the way around the bend. |
