| About the Venue | ||||||
Cromwell Weir is one of Ashfields flagship waters and is renown for big Barbel and Carp, the stretch starts directly at the entrance to the Lock and now goes downstream some 700+mtrs doubling in the last two years with the aquisition of the next stretch down below the wood. In its day this fantastic stretch as produced some stunning Barbel nearing the magical 20lb mark. Members have also had some very big Carp with tales and sightings of some real monsters. The chub here also go huge with a members having them to over 7lb. It also is famous for its throwing up of huge pike and quite recently big Zander in the cooler months. The upstream pegs can be very deep close in with the odd snag but in general its pretty clear throughout. The new downstream section has also produced some massive Barbel with the biggest so far at Almost 18lb. We must say though there is a down side to the top end of the section and that is the opposite bank, it can be very noisy at times with the anglers and fires. The downstream end is generally the more quieter section and you can get peace and quiet there. The pegs on the old upper section are not really suited to the elderly or infirm members as the banks are quite steep in places, efforts have been made to improve certain pegs over the years with the introduction of steps and bivvy areas. We have 2 local Bailiffs for the section Tony Lee and Chris Mendleson who can be contacted for any further info on pegs etc. Please remember this is a tidal stretch and therfore the river levels can rise and fall quite dramatically and members fishing here should purchase a tide time table form the lock keeper for accurate water levels and times. Members are reminded that there is to be no bivvying or camping in the grass field areas behind the stretch, all bivvying must be done on the actual bank itself and also in rainy/wet times cars are not permitted along the grass areas (tackle must be carried from either end) at these times. |

Members entering or exiting the venue should close and lock the gate at the top of the lane (near the farm) between 5pm and 8am mid week and all the time at weekends. Regarding the old stretch (upper section) in rainy or wet weather members are not permitted to drive along or park behind the pegs in the grass area. Members holding British Waterways keys who use the toilet facilities at the lock MUST leave them clean as they found them. Please use the car parks at either end of the section and park sensibly as they are not that large. Drive slowly along the lane as local dog walkers use this lane regular. Remember this is a tidal section of then river and care should be taken if bivvying up along the lower sections of bank the tide can and does come up quite fast and high at times, these times can be got from the Lock keeper who will sell you tide table booklets for around £2.00. The two Cromwell bailiffs are |Chris Mendelson on 07891 733541 and Tony Lee on 07531907404. Members beware of the speed bumps along the lane they are quite steep and will damage cars is you drive to fast! |
